4 cups flour 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 cup sugar 2 1/2 tablespoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup shortening 1 cup buttermilk 2 eggs
Sift flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and nutmeg together. Gently cut shortening into flour mixture. Whisk together the milk and eggs. Make a well in the flour mixture and gently combine the ingredients just until it holds together. Turn out onto a floured surface. Knead gently and roll out to 1-inch thickness. Cut biscuits with 2-inch cutter. Place on cookie sheets and brush tops lightly with egg.
Bake at 400 degrees F. for 15 minutes.
